Gender Diversity & the Voice - Production Study

Speech in Context
Study Description:
This study explores phonetic variation within the speech of men, women, and non-binary individuals. Eligible participants will be asked to complete a survey asking questions about their general background, gender and voice, personality, and language background. Then, participants will sign up for a production session, in which audio samples of their speech will be recorded. This will involve reading a passage, narrating some comics, and responding to questions in a conversational interview.

Click here to assess your eligibility. Participants who live in Metro Vancouver, are between the ages of 18 to 35, and speak with a Canadian or American English accent may be eligible to participate.

Robustness of Lateral Tongue Bracing in Second Language Speech

Study Description:
This study investigates speech articulation and tongue posture in a speaker's first language compared with a speaker's second (or additional) language.
Participation:
Participating involves reading aloud a short passage (40-50 seconds) multiple times in both your first and additional language, with bite blocks in your mouth. The entire duration of the study is no longer than an hour, and you will be compensated for your time with $15 cash.
Eligibility:
Participants must be first language speakers of English and second language learners of Spanish, French, or Japanese. Alternately, participants can be first language speakers of Spanish, French, or Japanese, and second language learners of English.

Listening to Cantonese Short Story

Participation:
In this study, you will be asked to listen to a 2-minute Cantonese story and answer some questions about the experiment and your language background. This experiment must be completed in Google Chrome as the auditory stimuli will not play properly in other browsers. **You are strongly encouraged to wear headphones in this task!**
Eligibility:
Cantonese speakers between 18 to 35 years old.
